Black Currant and Borage Oil
Several parts of black currant (Ribes nigrum) and borage (Baraga officinalis) plants are used medicinally. Black currant berries are also called tonsillitis berries, and borage seed oil is also called oil startlower. Vegetable oils derived from nuts or seeds.
Uses and Benefits:
Historically, the leaves of black currants and borage have been used for various rheumatic and inflammatory diseases, such as diuretics and herbal. Black currant has also been used for diarrhea, while borage has also been used as an antipyretic, expectorant, and general tonic. Today both vegetable oils are used as rich sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Along with evening primrose oil, these GLA-containing oils are used for inflammatory chronic and other conditions such as eczema, rheumatic disorders, breast pain, premenstrual syndrome, and diabetes neuropathy.1-4 Patients with these disorders considered to be sufficiently able to convert their essential fatty acids to GLA, a precursor of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids 5, therefore, supplementation with GLA-rich vegetable oils is considered beneficial.
Pharmacology:
The richest plant source of GLA is borage seed oil (about 23%), followed by black currant oil (15-20%) and evening primrose oil (7-10%) .15 The borage plant also contains small amounts pyrrolizidine alkaloids (highest in the leaves and stems), mucilage, saponins and tannins. Black currant contains flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and tannins, and oil is also rich in alpha-linolenic acid, which may become the body into eicosapentaenoic acid, which is also found in fish oils.
The metabolic pathway of GLA has been well established in humans and other animals. Dietary linoleic acid (LA), an essential fatty acid, GLA becomes by a rate-limiting enzyme step.GLA is then rapidly converted to dihomo-linolenic acid (GLA), which is metabolized to 1-series of prostaglandins (PGs, as PGE 1) and 3-series leukotrienes (LT), which have MTI-nflammatory properties, and arachidonic acid (AA) in limited quantities. AA is converted by cyclooxygenases and lipoxyge pro-inflammatory mediators such as 2-series prostaglandins
GLA has been shown that supplementation to reduce the response inflammatory cells in vitro enrichment of DGLA, the immediate About the Author:

Seeds, as small and unobtrusive as they seem, are an essential part of the life cycle of plants. In addition, they are useful for indentification of plants and, in fact, are often superior for that purpose that other parts of a plant. That's because seeds have distinctive characteristics, tend to outlast all other plant parts, and vary little within a species--unlike other parts such as leaves. Since weeds interfere with the growth, harvesting, and quality of crops, Linda Davis says, the ability to identify weed seeds before they are indavertently planted affords an economic advantage. Other weed-control measures--herbicides and mechanical removal of unwanted plants--are enormously costly in comparison. There are healthy stabs of soulful brass throughout, which evoke Memphis far more than Auckland, and add a neatly twisted flavor to the experience. Although they`re primarily a reggae band, the Black Seeds actually seem most comfortable when they let the soul/funk side move to the fore, as it does with "Make A Move," for instance, or "Afrophone." The reggae might take a backseat then, but it remains a vital part of the whole giving it an edge and bringing something slightly different to the party. Seeds of Racism in the Soul of America Seeds of Racism in the Soul of America
$6.48

"This book will be hotly debated, but we need such debates in order to shake ourselves out of the lethargy about who we are as a nation and how we got this way." --Gayraud S. Wilmore, from the Foreword White liberals once marched arm-in-arm with black activists during the civil rights era. Since the 1970s, however, such cooperation has dwindled. Why? Because some Northern white liberals, author Paul Griffin believes, carry the seeds of racism. In this historical analysis of racism in America, Griffin examines the subtle, insidious discrimination practiced by those who purport to be broad-minded and enlightened. He traces the seeds of racism from the pious New England Puritans who sought to explain the different stations of the races as God's arrangement to today's white liberals and feminists who may support affirmative action only because they still believe that African Americans (and other minorities) are inferior. Griffin's book dares to expose the racism that was implanted in this nation from its founding--and which continues to bear bitter fruit to this day.

A remarkable collaboration of art and science celebrating the diversity of seeds. An orchid seed may be minuscule, so small and light that one gram contains more than 7.5 million seeds. In contrast, a single-seeded Seychelles seed is a nut weighing up to 20 pounds. All seeds have the same purpose -- to travel through time and space until they reach the right place at the right moment to create a new plant. This large-format book melds art and science in an authoritative examination of the design and function of seeds. Special light and scanning electron microscopy are used to obtain astonishing images of diverse seeds at various states of maturity. Pods, pouches, keys, nuts and other vehicles of dispersal are explained and illustrated. These time capsules of life for plants familiar and strange are presented in minute, beautiful detail. Microphotographs of the tiniest seeds and extraordinarily detailed cutaway images of larger seeds are combined with text that explains the formation and maturation of seeds and describes how they find their way to becoming a copy of the parent plant. Literary references to plant reproduction are featured as well, along with early botanical illustrations. Authoritative and richly illustrated, Seeds offers a fascinating and intimate look at the remarkable reproductive process of plants. (20071220)

2 LPs on 1 CD: THE SEEDS/A WEB OF SOUND.The Seeds: Sky Saxon (vocals, harmonica, bass); Jan Savage (guitar); Daryl Hooper (piano, organ); Rick Andridge (drums).Recorded in Hollywood, California. The Seeds' first two albums were also their best. THE SEEDS, featuring the stomping garage-punk classics "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem To Make You Mine," arguably the hardest pre-heavy metal singles, is clearly a snot-nose classic. It's all in the song titles--"Evil Hoodoo," "No Escape," "Girl I Want You"--and the malevolence of the band's playing, especially that of organist Daryl Hooper and guitarist Jan Savage.A WEB OF SOUND is both a refinement and an abandonment of this approach. Some songs, especially "Mr. Farmer" and "Tripmaker," are as punky and psychedelic as anything on the debut. The last track, the 14-minute "Up In Her Room" is a total trip, like the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" reinterpreted by the free-jazz lunatics in the Red Crayola. Very weird, and if you're so inclined, very cool. Highly recommended.

Soul singer Martin Sexton releases his best work yet, the highly anticipated seventh record, Seeds. The troubadour says no thanks to several label offers and remains fiercely independent on his own. This album ranges like an American road-trip with stops in the regions of gospel, country and western, and rock, crafted with keen pop sensibility. Seeds oozes with that soul ... infused with spiritual hunger and child-like joy, all delivered with Sexton's fervent vocals. Sexton's raucus rendition of the late Billy Preston's Will It Go Round In Circles rocks with fuzz bass and Leslie vocal shimmer. Sexton along with Crit Harmon combine traditional rhythm sections with anything from minnow buckets and whiskey jugs to a guitar as drum kit to frame the tracks with unique, timeless production.
