Plant Exotic

Exotic plants?
Well, my mom's birthday is approaching and loves plants. She loves working out, etc. I would get soooo some type of plant (reasonably priced), which is totally unique and different. I do not want to give her something the following type could gain from it. something that really "wow" her … take into account that we live in VA, so obviously something that would keep alive in such enivornment. Can anyone make a suggestion? I really want this very special birthday. Almost anything really beautiful and unqiue.
You might succeed with a palm-resistant, which would rare, and have that touch of the exotic. Trachycarpus fortunei is probably the toughest of palm, with a good Chamaerops humilis 2. I grow so much so, in England, and think VA would be good for them. If you read the posts in this forum, is known as Hardy for Virginia. Hope http://members.aol.com/palmferndc/palms/ch-windmill.html http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/palms/msg011534038594.html this helps. Good luck! Rob

Bold and Exotic Plants
$1.01 Bold and exotic plants are those whose form ensures that they have a dramatic presence in any planting scheme. The quality that defines them is the contribution they make to the structure of a garden. Bold plants leap out from the rest by virtue of their striking overall forms or the shapes of individual leaves; exotic plants look like they have wandered into the garden from another climate, suggesting a tropical atmosphere -- they immediately capture the attention of anyone entering a garden, or focus the eye as it sweeps over a border. This innovative book is both a celebration of the exciting qualities of these richly diverse plants and an imaginative presentation of their uses in the garden. In the section on Qualities, Noel Kingsbury first defines the characteristics of bold and exotic plants, for example, an elegant form, fine lines, large leaves or spikes. The next section, In Your Garden, explores different approaches and situations for using bold plants, from dry or shady areas to featuring specimen plants or creating an exotic look. An easy-to-use Directory includes 100 of the best bold and exotic plants, including for example, tree ferns, agaves, eryngiums, and bamboos, and has all the information needed to facilitate plant selection. Finally, the section on Practicalities gives all the advice and guidance needed to care for, propagate, and maintain bold and exotic plants. |

Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilizatio
$6.86 DIVTobacco was first cultivated and enjoyed by the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas, who used it for medicinal, religious, and social purposes long before the arrival of Columbus. But when Europeans began to colonize the American continents, it became something else entirely -- a cultural touchstone of pleasure and success, and a coveted commodity that would transform the world economy forever. Iain Gately's Tobacco tells the epic story of an unusual plant and its unique relationship with the history of humanity, from its obscure ancient beginnings, through its rise to global prominence, to its current embattled state today. In a lively narrative, Gately makes the case for the tobacco trade being the driving force behind the growth of the American colonies, the foundation of Dutch trading empire, the underpinning cause of the African slave trade, and the financial basis for our victory in the American Revolution. Informed and erudite, Tobacco is a vivid and provocative look into the complex history of this precious plant. A rich, complex history ... Deeply engaging and witty. -- Carmela Ciuraru, Los Angeles Times Ambitious ... informative and perceptive ... Gately is an amusing writer, which is a blessing. -- Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post [Gately] documents the resourcefulness with which human beings of every class, religion, race, and continent have pursued the lethal leaf. -- John Leland, The New York Times Book Review/div |

Perspectives on Plant Competition
$74.89 Originally published in 1990, continued requests for copies of Perspectives on Plant Competition by James B. Grace and David Tilman have demonstrated its utility to practitioners and especially to students. The dynamics and outcomes of plant interactions are of increasingly great interest and importance to ecologists and environmental biologists. Ever since the effects of global environmental change have emerged as a major issue, ecologists have increasingly focused their work on predicting the responses of natural systems to environmental changes. This has forced us to confront both the unknowns and the complexity of species interactions. Simply put, it is now clear that, without a better understanding of the mechanisms of plant interactions, we will not be able to predict the responses of communities and ecosystems to elevated nitrogen deposition, to changes in species composition and diversity, to elevated atmospheric CO2, to climate change, or to invasive exotic species. Work on plant interactions has continued unabated of course since the original printing of Perspectives on Plant Competition but the title is generally held to have had a positive effect on subsequent work on plant interactions, both by showcasing the variety of ways in which competition can be approached and by substantially reducing some of the confusion about issues that existed before its publication. It still has an important role to play in guiding future research on plant interactions. Perhaps an additional, continuing value is in the example it serves for the maturation of an important ecological topic. The lasting message of this book is that one cannot fully understand an idea without understanding the perspective upon which it is based, including the systems that have inspired the idea and the finer details of the research goals of those involved. Plant competition will continue to be a multifaceted topic. This book will continue to provide useful guidance for the further exploration @R¸õÂ?\)ÿ¾Úð |

Aboriginal Plant Collectors
$39.95 As world exploration expanded in the 17th century, explorers of Australia were amazed to discover the unique plants and animals they encountered in the ''Great Southern Land.'' Back in Europe, scholars craved for exotic specimens to challenge the ways in which they, as scientists, ordered the natural world. An imperative for British colonists was to discover and secure natural resources of economic benefit to the Empire. Europeans who investigated the expanding frontier of settlement were impelled to engage with indigenous people who were being progressively dispossessed of their land. Plant hunters were a hardy breed of men primarily employed to collect both dried and living plants and send them back to Europe. Aboriginal guides accompanied plant collectors into the field. As hunter-gatherers, the guides had bush skills that were derived from their extensive environmental knowledge and first hand experience of the Australian flora. Demons in Eden: The Paradox of Plant Diversity
$10.77 DIVDIVJonathan Silvertown here explores the astonishing diversity of plant life in regions as spectacular as the verdant climes of Japan, the lush grounds of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, the shallow wetlands and teeming freshwaters of Florida, the tropical rainforests of southeast Mexico, and the Canary Islands archipelago, whose evolutionary novelties—and exotic plant life—have earned it the sobriquet “the Galápagos of botany.” Along the way, Silvertown looks closely at the evolution of plant diversity in these locales and explains why such variety persists in light of ecological patterns and evolutionary processes. Demons in Eden: The Paradox of Plant Diversity
$9.37 DIVAt the heart of evolution lies a bewildering paradox. Natural selection favors above all the individual that leaves the most offspring—a superorganism of sorts that Jonathan Silvertown here calls the Darwinian demon. But if such a demon existed, this highly successful organism would populate the entire world with its own kind, beating out other species and eventually extinguishing biodiversity as we know it. Why then, if evolution favors this demon, is the world filled with so many different life forms? What keeps this Darwinian demon in check? If humankind is now the greatest threat to biodiversity on the planet, haveIwe/Ibecome the Darwinian demon?BRBRIDemons in Eden/Iconsiders these questions using the latest scientific discoveries from the plant world. Readers join Silvertown as he explores the astonishing diversity of plant life in regions as spectacular as the verdant climes of Japan, the lush grounds of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, the shallow wetlands and teeming freshwaters of Florida, the tropical rainforests of southeast Mexico, and the Canary Islands archipelago, whose evolutionary novelties—and exotic plant life—have earned it the sobriquet the Galapagos of botany.
