Is there a way to stratify Dogwood seeds without peat?

I have all these dogwood seeds, but no crowd to stratfiy them in. Everything I've read claims to use peat. I have no way to get to a store at this time (long story) but I have access to potting soil, regular soil, sand. Is there anything most that can stratify in, or just another form of stratification?

Here's some 101: How to Cold Stratify seeds in the Household Refrigerator remains almost the right temperature for the cold stratifying seeds. Place seeds in a small amount of barely moist medium such as vermiculite, peat moss, seed starting mix or clean gravel and wrap securely to keep it moist.
