Iris Tall

If iris leaves be trimmed at an angle?
All the gardening website tells me is pruned so they are 6 inches tall.
Cut at an angle .. a V-shape inverted (^)… (so that is 6 inches high) is recommended when transplanting or the need to reduce the excessive foliage. This allows the iris have some air circulating around it, and allows the rhizome more sun to dry, which helps prevent disease and rot. Also make it easier for you to detect and eliminate the bugs that might start to hurt. Here are some photos of how they are pruned a (angle ^). Note how the shape of the angle allows water to drain quickly: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78245414 @ N00/265761241 / http://www.sunset.com/sunset/garden/step_by_step/article/ 0,20633,1051205,00. http://www.region18.com/bearded_iris.htm html (scroll down the page) You can trim the leaves when you're preparing plants for digging and transplanting and if necessary to remove diseased foliage, or if the foliage is more cultured … However, Iris foliage is not necessary to prune every year, and a reasonable amount of foliage that is needed to increase food reserves for flowering the following spring. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/plantanswers/flowers/ Iris.html BTW, you should cut the stem has finished flowering at the base, and that is no longer productive and is not useful or very useful for the plant. Good luck! I hope this is useful.

Blue Iris
$17.98 For poet Mary Oliver, nature is full of mystery and miracle. From the excitation of birds in the sky to the flowers and plants that are "the simple garments" of the earth, the natural world is her text of both the earth's changes and its permanence. In Blue Iris, Mary Oliver collects ten new poems, two dozen of her poems written over the last two decades, and two previously unpublished essays on the beauty and wonder of plants. The poet considers roses, of course, as well as poppies and peonies; lilies and morning glories; the thick-bodied black oak and the fragrant white pine; the tall sunflower and the slender bean. James Dickey has said of her, "Far beneath the surface-flash of linguistic effect, Mary Oliver works her quiet and mysterious spell. It is a true spell, unlike any other poet's, the enchantment of the true maker." In Blue Iris, she has captured with breathtaking clarity the true enchantment and mysterious spell of flowers and plants of all sorts and their magnetic hold on us. |

$24.29 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: THE LOVEK'S REVENGE. A STORY OF THE PENINSULAR WAE. When Lord Wellington retired behind the lines of Torres Vedras, I was in command of a company of Cacadores, or Portuguese light infantry. My subalterns were two brothers, young Scotchmen, whom I shall call Cameron. They were both fine, amiable, and brave young men; but the youngest was one of the noblest, freest, most gallant and generous spirits I ever beheld. At the time of which I speak, he was not above sixteen;?tall, handsome, active, and enthusiastically devoted to his profession, he had the promise of becoming a most distinguished soldier. He had already been engaged in one or two actions, in which his behaviour had attracted great notice and praise; and, in addition to these qualities, he had a dash of romance which crowned and harmonized the whole, peculiarly fitted for a war such as that in the Peninsula,?a war even to the knife, for all that human nature holds most dear?for home, hearth, and roof-tree?for country, family, and friends. At the time we entered the Portuguese service, the regiments were little more than skeletons; but recruits flocked in, in crowds, and were speedily organized into battalions, 9 under the British officers and non-commissioned officers, who formed, as it were, the nucleus of the corps. Among the men who joined us from the country, was a young peasant, about twenty years old, whose father's cottage was within a musket-shot of our lines. He was peculiarly quick, active, and intelligent; and rapidly became what is termed avery smart soldier, and was soon promoted to be a corporal. This lad was, indeed, one of the most superior persons of his class I ever met with. His attention to his duty, and the smartness and precision with which it was performed, were equally remarkabl... |
