Ginger Plant

How can I grow a ginger root that I bought in my store?
I have a ginger root I bought and I want to become a ginger plant. What steps should I take to do this. I had a previous failed attempt to leave the ginger root in water (suspended as I have seen done before potatoes) and it rotted. Any ideas? Anyone doing this?
Sure, I've done it many times. It has an attractive plant and you will ginger forever … at least here in Zone 7. If you are in the 6 or farther north, I can not say for sure, the winters can be too cold. All you have to do is cut the roots into quarters, making sure each one has a button eye. Plant it about an inch deep in garden soil regular where it gets plenty of sun, water and watch it grow. The flowers are heaven-scented.
