Blue Festuca Blue Festuca
$3.79

A handsome and different ground cover. Grows in grassy, tuft-like clumps. 6-10" high. The spectacular, non-fading blue foliage and unique growing habits make this ideal for borders. Flower and rock gardens and small areas where you would like to draw special attention. Quite ornamental. Blue Festuca is a hardy, rapidly multiplying, year round ground cover. It does well in full sun and poor, fairly dry soil. Quite suitable for seashore planting -- it can take exposure to windblown sand and even salt spray. Plant 6" apart for tight clump pattern and then mulch tightly to eliminate weeds. Start new plants by division of clumps. Plant Blue Festuca for a real attention-getter in your lawn. Plant in full sun for best color. Drought resistant. For a rain garden.

Estimation of Forage Mass, Dry Matter Intake and Digestibility Estimation of Forage Mass, Dry Matter Intake and Digestibility
$93.81

Forage mass is required to estimate important attributes in grazing studies, e.g., total amount of available nutrients, effect of management practices on the pastures, crop growth rate, and forage production, utilization, and degradation. Dry matter intake and digestibility represent the most important and useful estimates of the forage nutritive value. Unfortunately, in trials under grazing conditions, forage mass is difficult to measure because the crop cannot be harvested without affecting both animal and pasture performance. Likewise, the actual feed intake and nutritive value of the forage consumed are also unknown. In this work, the author reports results from different methods to estimate forage mass of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, Schreb) pastures, and dry matter intake, fecal output and digestibility in beef steers under indoors and grazing conditions. Anybody related to animal production under grazing conditions could benefit by reading this essay.

Turfgrass Biology, Genetics, and Breeding Turfgrass Biology, Genetics, and Breeding
$125.77

The cultivation of various turfgrasses has evolved into a dynamic, multi-billion dollar industry. Yet, there is still a real lack of information available for those seeking to understand the complex science behind its growth. This book, edited by two knowledgeable and highly respected experts, presents for the first time a comprehensive study of the various types of turfgrasses, their genetic and biological makeup, and the specifics of when, how, where and why each species was adapted for use. The only book that deals specifically with the science behind the major types of turfgrasses, Turfgrass Biology will prove to be an invaluable, time-saving reference and research tool for professionals interested or engaged in the genesis of turfgrasses.PART 1. Flora of North America Flora of North America
$101.48

Flora of North America brings together for the first time ever in a concise and easy to understand format information on all of the plants growing spontaneously in North America north of Mexico. Volume 24 of Flora North America is one of two volumes on grasses to be published in this series (Volume 25, though it follows sequentially, was published in 2003). Together they will provide a comprehensive, authoritative, illustrated account of this important group of plants. Most of the species treated are either native to North America north of Mexico or are introduced species that are now established in the region, but there are many that do not fit into these categories. Among the additional species are several that the USDA has identified as major weed threats; and others that are known only as cultivated plants, some being cultivated for their ornamental value, others as sources for human food or animal forage. For instance, volume 24 includes such ecologically important genera as Elymus (wheatgrasses), Poa (bluegrasses), and Festuca (fescues), economically important species such as Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley), Oryza (rice), and Zizania (wild rice), several ornamental species, including some bamboos, and noxious weeds such as Elymus repens (quackgrass), and Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). The volume includes identification keys, descriptions, line drawings, and ecological characteristics for each of the species; distribution maps for the native and established species; and a list of commonly encountered synonyms for the accepted names. The treatments, each of which has been extensively reviewed, are based on a combination of original observations and critical review of the literature.

Excerpt: Mount Elgon National Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The park is named after Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya. Mount Elgon National Park is located on the border of Kenya and Uganda. 140 km North East of Lake Victoria. It is uniquely split down the middle by the Kenyan-Ugandan border. Mount Elgon is an important water catchment for the Nzoia River which flows to Lake Victoria and for the Turkwel River which flows into Lake Turkana. The climate is moist to moderate dry. Annual rainfall is over 1,270mm. The dry season runs from June to August, and December to March, although it can rain at any time. Elgon's slopes support a rich variety of vegetation ranging from montane forest to high open moorland studded with the giant lobelia and groundsel plants. The vegetation varies with altitude. The mountain slopes are covered with olive Olea hochstetteri and Aningueria adolfi-friedericii wet montane forest. At higher altitudes, this changes to olive and Podocarpus gracilior forest, and then a Podocarpus and bamboo Arundinaria alpina zone. Higher still is a Hagenia abyssinica zone and then moorland with heaths Erica arborea and Philippia trimera, tussock grasses such as Agrostis gracilifolia and Festuca pilgeri, herbs such as Alchemilla, Helichrysum, Lobelia, and the giant groundsels Senecio barbatipes and Senecio elgonensis. The botanical diversity of the park includes giant podocarpus, juniper and Elgon olive trees cedar Juniperus procera, pillarwood Cassipourea malosana, elder Sambucus adnata, pure stands of Podocarpus gracilior and many orchids. Of the 400 species recorded for the area the following are of particular note as they only occur in high altitude broad-leaf montane forest: Ardisiandra wett... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7355597

Humic acid helps with seed germination and may increase the uptake of important micronutrients. Best of all, FoxFarm adds 20 species of beneficial microbes to help convert fertilizers into vital plant food and fight off disease. It’s granulated and easy to use, and it provides gentle, slow-release feedings all season long. All of our Happy Frog® organic fertilizers are specially formulated to replenish the soil, lift the human spirit, and beautify the Earth, naturally. Bring your plants to life! Garden tip: Lawn care is simple with Happy Frog®. For moderate-climate grasses like bluegrass, rye, and fescue, apply four pounds (one box) to every 150 square feet in March, May, July, and October. For tropical grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine, apply the same amounts in April, May, June, July, and August. Spread evenly with a garden spreader and water thoroughly. A full organic lawn care program also includes leaving the grass clippings on the lawn to decompose and add nitrogen, and raking in compost like our Happy Frog® Soil Conditioner twice a year, in spring and fall. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IIL PASTURE. Sect. 1. Nature of it. Where the plough has not encroached, there are very rich fattening grounds throughout the county, particularly in the baronies of Carberry, Clane, and North and South Salt; where the ground has been much exhausted by the plough, the pasture is poor and light. A tillage farmer never thinks of turning out to grass, until his land is not able to bear more corn. About forty years since, the calcareous gravel, every where to be found under the surface, became of general use; its effects were violent and extraordinary; it produced for eight, ten, or twelve years the most luxuriant crops, by which the land became so exhausted, as to be incapable of further cropping, and was left to time for improvement; without other assistants, time and sheep-stock would not restore such exhausted land in fifty years; but, if such gravelled land had been put at first under a judicious course of alternate green and white crops, it would bear tillage for ever. Sect. Sect. 2. Breed of Cattle, Kc. In the course of this work the reader will find the fullest account, in the reporter's power, of the different kinds, and their means of improvement; the fairs of the county are stated in a separate table. All the horses, cows, and bullocks used in winter are housed and well fed with hay. Sect. 3. Grasses. The grasses in the meadows and feeding pastures of the county are of the most valuable kinds; when submitting tillage land to grass, the farmers chiefly sow the seeds from the natural meadows, which are filled with red and white clover, trefoil, ray-grass, white hayseed, foxtail meadow-fescue, ribworth,

A Book of Blue Flowers A Book of Blue Flowers
$5.18

Perhaps the most uncommon hue in the plant kingdom, the color blue strikes a distinctive note in any garden. In this fascinating book, now available in paperback, Robert Geneve provides a wide selection of blue flowers that will help readers expand the range of colors in their gardening palettes — from powder blue and turquoise to navy and violet. A well-traveled garden visitor and gifted photographer, the author has included more than 150 stunning photos of blue flowers from gardens around the world. <i>A Book of Blue Flowers</i> is an ideal handbook for gardeners of all skill levels and in any climate.Blue is not a common color in plant organs other than flowers. Our view of the world would be quite different if a segment of deciduous plants had brilliant blue-colored leaves included with the reds and yellows that dominate fall. Red as a fall color is the result of unmasking and intensifying anthocyanins as chlorophyll breaks down in the leaf. Since blue is one manifestation of anthocyanin pigments, I am not sure why it is not found in fall colors except that it may be related to the cellular pH in senescing leaves. It suggests that blue as a flower color has advantages for attracting pollinators that warranted its evolution in flowers.<br><br>Even so, some types ot plants normally have bluish leaves. They can complement species with blue flowers by repeating their color in the garden. Blue foliage color is more common in certain plant groups than others. It is most common in conifers such as fir (<i>Abies</i>). juniper (<i>Juniperus</i>), cedar (<i>Cedrus</i>), and spruce (<i>Picea</i>); ornamental grasses such as fescue (<i>Festuca</i>) and oatgrass (<i>Helictotricon</i>); and desert species such as <i>Agave, Echeveria, and Euphorbia</i>. It is even found in perennials like hostas and rue (<i>Ruta</i>). The blue coloring is not always@¸Që…¸ÿ¾Úð
